RECONTEXUALIZING AND REPURPOSING....

Isn't it interesting that a letter is just an object. The letter "W" is no different than any other object, like a rock. But then once language is invented, that object, without changing anything about it, can suddenly be used in a new way. The invention of language creates a new context, and that context creates the possibility that other things can be used in a manner that no one ever thought of before. It's interesting to realize that the purpose of a particular thing is not limited by its current use. All one must do is create a new context for other possibilities to actualize. Everything that exists, without having to change one thing about it, has infinite purposes, values, and uses because purpose and value are relative. Something can be invaluable but change the context and it suddenly can become the most precious item in the world. Just as easily something that is extremely valuable can become valueless. I'm trying to drive home the point that a particular purpose can only exist if it is also held in certain context. It's a powerful concept, that if lived experientially, can impact our lives greatly. Many people today feel sad because they feel life is purposeless or lacking in vigor. But what needs to be realized is that when you hold yourself that way, you are taking for granted the context you are holding which creates that feeling. And furthermore, you're taking for granted that that context is the only context. Changing the context experientially, not just as a wish or thought, takes some mental flexibility, spaciousness, courage, and inventiveness but it can be done. This is something I love to work with people on.

As a mental experiment pretend you are the letter "W" before language is invented. You're just a boring old object sitting around. But then, this letter "W" gets an idea for language. Now "W" isn't just a boring old object, it can represent a sound. Without changing at all, our friend the “W” has a newfound purpose in life.

Similarly, the object called you exists in a certain context. If you aren't satisfied, contemplate how you can find a new context in which to hold yourself. This is done through serious

contemplation work. You may even be able to find new purpose, meaning and fulfillment simply through questioning the beliefs, assumptions, and context with which you hold yourself and the world to be, and nothing more.
